Croatia’s Presidency of the EU Council
In January 2020 Croatia takes over the rotating Presidency over the Council of the EU, for the first time.
The six month Presidency rotates among EU Member States and allows for each country to drive the EU’s agenda and calendar. Presiding countries chair meetings at each Council level and make sure the overall legislative agenda runs smoothly. Member States work in so called Trios, which ensure long-term legislative continuity. At the same time, the Presidency also allows Member States to highlight national focus areas as priorities and give local issues high-level visibility. Croatia’s Trio kicked off in January 2019 with Romania at the helm, followed by Finland, and then Croatia.
Presidencies offer a great opportunity to the private sector as well, to engage with national administrations and build critical relationships with decision makers. Croatia’s Presidency will be no exception.
