Natko Vlahovic, CEO and Founder of Vlahovic Group, wrote an insightful article published in the Croatian business magazine “Entrepreneur” on the upcoming Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU, underlining three key opportunities for the business sector to successfully engage in the process. The Croatian Presidency, dubbed EU2020HR, will run from January 1st, 2020 to June 30th, 2020. At this point, Croatian businesses still have a fairly low awareness level of the opportunities EU2020HR has to offer, but we are here to remedy that.
The first key opportunity for the business sector is providing input through specific channels and supporting the government in devising national priorities. EU legislation is quite complex, but all legislative initiatives start as a proper idea in a proper political forum. Businesses must recognize the right place for their ideas and ignite a debate.
The second opportunity to engage a Presidency, according to the text, is to secure a place in the official schedule or calendar of events. Presidencies often offer their auspices to events organized by relevant industries as these events provide added value to the presidency itself. When it comes to EU2020HR, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs is the key preparatory body for events in Zagreb and some major Brussels industries have already had their business associations engage the Croatian government.
This brings us to the third opportunity, i.e. making use of your business associations. Business associations, chambers and all other bodies representing whole industries have a better chance of organizing official presidency events. This is a great opportunity for industries in search of further investments or ones looking to position themselves as best practice examples.
